Consulting with Scott True

Consulting begins with a call to define your needs. While I may provide some recommendations during this call, its primary purpose is to understand your situation and goals.

Following this call, I will provide a proposal outlining the recommended deliverables, which may include the following:

Site Visit

A site visit involves an on-site inspection of the current construction phase, where I assess progress and provide guidance. Depending on the complexity of the project, site visits can last anywhere from an hour to a full day. During the visit, I take notes and photos, and within a week, I provide a detailed report with findings and recommendations. A follow-up call is included.

Consultation Call

If a consultation call is the most appropriate next step, we will schedule a Zoom meeting to review documents and discuss key details. The call is recorded for your reference, and I will provide a summary of key takeaways and recommendations afterward.

Energy Analysis

This service involves inputting your planned home’s specifications into energy modeling software to assess efficiency and compare different scenarios. The goal is to optimize decisions regarding building methods and materials to achieve the best performance.

High-Performance Checklist

A customized guide to ensure durability, comfort, health, energy efficiency, and proper project sequencing for your home.

I start with a proven template and tailor it to your specific project. This detailed report covers every aspect of high-performance construction, providing recommendations for each category.

What’s Included?

  • Durability – Strategies to enhance longevity and resilience
  • Comfort – Methods to improve indoor climate
  • Health – Approaches to better indoor air quality and well-being
  • Energy Efficiency – Recommendations for reducing energy consumption
  • Project Sequencing – A customized order of operations to ensure all high-performance elements are integrated effectively

Unlike traditional construction, high-performance homes often require a different build sequence based on selected materials and methods. This checklist ensures your home’s construction is optimized for performance from start to finish.

HVAC Preplanning

I always recommend having your HVAC design done by a professional who understands building science—a rare but crucial expertise. Many HVAC designers simply focus on temperature control, but true high-performance HVAC goes beyond that.

Why Preplanning Matters:

  • Humidity Control – Essential for comfort, health, and durability. Poor humidity management leads to discomfort, mold, and potential structural damage.
  • Ventilation – Standard exhaust fans create negative pressure, pulling in unfiltered, moisture-laden air. A balanced ventilation plan prevents this.
  • Proper Sizing – Most HVAC systems are oversized, leading to inefficiency and excessive wear. Preplanning ensures right-sized equipment for optimal performance.

By preplanning, you’ll be prepared to guide your HVAC designer with clear expectations for a high-performance system—not just a standard one.

High-Performance Phase Inspections

These are site visits focused on inspecting specific phases of construction related to high-performance building techniques.

GC Partnership

This unique service is designed to help homeowners build their own high-performance homes. Since most critical high-performance details occur before the drywall phase, I act as the General Contractor (GC) during the first half of the build while you assist. After the drywall phase, we switch roles—you take over as the GC, and I transition into an advisory role to assist you through the remainder of the project.

Recommended Services by Others

Upon request, I can refer who I think is best suited to help with the following services based on your needs.

  • WUFI Energy Modeling – Ideal for Passive House certification or an in-depth energy analysis.
  • HVAC Design – I strongly recommend hiring a specialist with expertise in building science to design your HVAC system.
  • Construction Drawings – High-performance details are often missing from standard plans. This service provides professional drawings to document those critical elements. If needed, I can also provide guidance through consultation notes, but when formal drawings are required, this service ensures they’re properly incorporated.
